Main description

Ancient Grace is a graphite portrait of a ewe I once had the privilege of caring for.

She stood tall and proud, and that was what I wanted to focus on in this piece. There was something calm but confident about her. Sheep can often be overlooked, but they have their own personalities, and I wanted this portrait to show the character I saw in her.

I drew Ancient Grace on smooth, hot-pressed watercolour paper. This allowed me to add the fine details in her fleece and gradually build up the light and darker areas. I also paid close attention to her eyes and gentle expression.
