A Moment of Trust in the Golden Light

Connection captures a fleeting, powerful pause between horse and rider — that quiet stillness before the intensity of the course begins. Inspired by a photo I took while working at a grassroots show jumping competition, this piece was born from a winter afternoon bathed in golden light. The low sun cast long shadows across the arena, wrapping the horse in a warm glow that highlighted its strength and calm focus.

This artwork honours those in-between moments: the breath before takeoff, the unspoken trust, the deep bond built over time. Having been there to help set up the course and reset poles, I witnessed this closeness firsthand — and it was this sense of connection I wanted to bring to life.

Created in soft pastels on Pastelmat paper, Connection is rich in depth and realism. The interplay of light and shadow enhances the lifelike textures, while the dark background draws the eye to the horse’s form, muscle, and tack — emphasising both detail and quiet strength.
