Main description

Dappled Grace is a graphite portrait of an Appaloosa horse, drawn from a reference photo by Jack Creek Appaloosas.

I had never drawn an Appaloosa before, and I knew the spotted coat would be a challenge in graphite. What drew me to this reference was the gentle turn of the horse’s head and the calm, elegant feel of the pose. I liked the way the mane falls down the neck and how the darker markings contrast with the softer shading of the coat.

I wanted to keep the finished piece light and soft rather than overworking it. Although it is one of my smaller originals, it still has plenty of detail and character.

Dappled Grace is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork. It is sold mounted and framed, ready to display.
