Main description

Stranded is an original pastel artwork of a polar bear standing on a weathered wooden raft, surrounded by open water. It was created using a reference photo by photographer Karen Broemmelsick.

What drew me to the reference was the contrast between the pale bear and the darker water, but also the feeling behind the scene. The bear looks exposed and uncertain, carried by something outside its control, but it is still standing. For me, the piece reflects both the vulnerability of wildlife and the instinct to keep going.

I used pastels on Pastelmat and focused on the different textures of the soft fur, rough wood and moving water. The polar bear is the lightest area of the artwork, helping it stand out against the darker sea.
