Main description

Welsh Matron is a portrait of a ewe keeping a close watch over her lamb. It was inspired by one I had the privilege of caring for.

What drew me to her was how calm she looked while still being aware of everything happening around her. You could see her protective side without anything dramatic happening in the scene. I wanted the portrait to show that bond between a ewe and her lamb.

I created the artwork using coloured pencils and Pan Pastel on Pastelmat paper. I used the softer pastel layers alongside the finer pencil details to build up the texture of her wool and the smaller details around her face and eyes.

Welsh Matron is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork.
